BISWANATH: Along with several other organisations, the Assam State Primary Teacher’s Association has been protesting in demand for the scrapping of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and continuing with the old pension format.

Following the appeal by the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation, the Assam State Primary Teacher’s Association’s Bharat Yatra initiative which started from Guwahati on the Teachers’ Day reached Biswanath Chariali on Thursday. The participants of the Yatra took the occasion to remind the government about ‘No Pension, No Vote’.

Meanwhile, the president of the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation pointed out that while the ministers are entitled to a pension, why should teachers not be entitled to the same. He also pointed out that ours is a democratic country, and those in power have to listen to the demands of the public. He also added that if their demands are not fulfilled, they will be asking people not to vote for the current government in the upcoming general election.

The participants also took part in a meeting organised at the playground of the Sakumatha Tea Garden. It is important to note that this Yatra will travel to other locations in the state including Nalbari and Kokrajhar. It will also travel through the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh before finally making its way to the capital on October 5.

In a show of unity and determination, professors and non-teaching staff at Gauhati University (GU) came together on Thursday to voice their discontent with the National Pension Scheme (NPS). Organized by the GU Teacher’s Association, the protest called for the immediate cancellation of the NPS, citing its heavy financial burden on university employees. The demand on the forefront was the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), which the protestors argued would be more favourable to their financial well-being. With unwavering resolve, they pledged to continue their protest until their demands were met.
