SHILLONG: With the failure of the talks with the concerned authorities, the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) has announced that they will continue their ongoing agitation in the state. This will lead to problems in multiple colleges in the state, especially the first-semester students.
Teachers of a total of 22 affiliate colleges of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have boycotted the first semester classes of the courses under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme according to the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020. The teachers had a three-hour-long meeting with Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Vice Chancellor of the university, but were unable to reach any solution at its conclusion.
The protesting teachers have boycotted the first semester classes since the beginning of August and they had demanded that the university withdraw the notification issued on 12 July regarding the implementation of NEP in the state of Meghalaya. The association called this step taken by the university illegal and mentioned that it was not approved by the Academic Council of North Eastern Hill University.
The teachers also informed that the Vice Chancellor has refused to withdraw the previous notification, but decided to place the same before the Academic Council. On one hand, the protesting teachers mentioned that they would continue their non-cooperation protest, on the other hand, the university remained adamant about the implementation of the NEP. They mentioned that a large number of colleges have already gone ahead with the new courses and schedules and that not a single principal of the 75 institutions under the university has come forward to express concerns regarding the implementation of the policy.
With the Academic Council scheduled to meet later this year, the necessary education of the first-year students of these colleges is in limbo till the MCTA and the NEHU university come to a mutual agreement.
